Rye's historic Wurlitzer theatre organ, the second to arrive in England during 1926 and the 999th to be made, has been sited at Thomas Peacock Community College, Rye, since 1958. In 1990, due to lack of use, it was threatened with sale to a private collection. The Rye Old Scholars' Association arranged fund raising concerts for the next three years. Appreciative audiences for Theatre Organ music soon became apparent. Therefore, in 1993 the FRIENDS OF RYE'S WURLITZER was formed by Richard Moore. Since then, nearly one hundred celebrity concerts and events have been arranged, performed by some of the country's leading organists. 1997 saw F.O.R.W. successfully achieve Lottery funding of £9,500 by the Arts Council of England to complete the project. This has enabled first rate concerts to continue, and the future of the Wurlitzer at the College is now totally secure. Eight concerts are held each year. Should you need further details, please do not hesitate to contact us.
